First of all, since usually even the smallest sizes are too big for me, I knitted it in the smallest size on a slightly smaller needle. It came out way too small, and I had to rip it all back to nothing.
The silver lining was that I was able to correct 95% of the mistakes I had made the first time around: I had done the yoke incorrectly, it was too short, IWoolly Stuffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06555584654985797945noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8695392552178122813.post-50529259122529837022011-11-26T17:59:00.001+00:002011-11-26T18:01:09.754+00:00A Good DayToday, when the mail came, I had a package from Siga - some beautiful yarn, a card with her beautiful handwriting, and some chocolates. I couldn't take a picture of the yummy mini Ritter Sports, because... well you can probably figure out that they disappeared long before I got the camera out!
Thank you, Siga!
So, that was an absolutely lovely way to start the day.

And I've given pounds of them away to friends already. So I made jam.

R said something like, "well, now you can use these measurements for the next jumper you make me." I think that means success.
After re-knitting with the number of stitches called for by the pattern, I knit in the round, up to the base of the sleeve. I think I got a bit of culture shock. It really was like walking through a man-made canyon - it was so loud, and it smelled like grilled meat. I've been working away at Beau - I'm altering it. Did I tell you that despite swatching, my first attempt was too big - by about 6 inches!! And Rog doesn't go for teabaggy clothing. So I ripped it all out, and am now making it again with the number of stitches the pattern called for.

It's a jumper for R's birthday. I know he likes things to be very fine, so I've used much finer yarn then the recipe called for - instead of casting on 90 stitches per side, I cast on 140. It'll take me forever, but that's why I started 2 months early!
From our garden:

I'm pretty pleased with it; we're in the middle of a heatwave here in London, so I haven't really had an opportunity to wear it yet.
Seriously, we got off the plane from Sicily, and it felt like instead of landing in London, we had landed right back in Sicily. Luckily, the garden didn't suffer too much, though it was desperate to be wateredWoolly Stuffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06555584654985797945noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8695392552178122813.post-1883437819835061492010-06-25T19:46:00.000+01:002010-06-25T19:46:33.793+01:00AmberI had to frog Amber, because even though I knit the smallest size, I was absolutely drowning in it. I've resized it, dropping the cast-on from 56 stitches per front and back, to 40 stitches per front and back. That's 32 stitches less than the pattern called for, in total! And it's just right, I think. Now all that's left is the cowl neck.
Here's our mini-conservatory, where we have breakfast.

We've been spending any time we have in the garden. It's meant a lot less knitting, and a lot less being on the computer in general, which is really great. Those are some cut flowers from the garden.
Here's some other things I've grown from seed. I know this isn't that exciting to most people, but I'm feeling pretty proud of myself that I've gotten things so far along.

I haven't written in a long time. Partially haven't had the time, partially haven't had the desire.
We've been spending a lot of time in our garden. I've planted lots of seeds. Aren't my beet seedlings pretty? And those are some broad beans in front of the beets. I had the beans outside, but the stupid squirrels kept digging them up, so I've started them indoors instead.

So in lieu of knitting news, I'll just show you an image of a lovely bird I saw yesterday (image from www.rspb.org.uk).
It looked so exotic, I was impressed to learn that it's a bog-standard British bird: the green woodpecker.
I've been to Edinburgh twice in the past month for work.

It's not love at first sight; we'll have to get comfortable in this flat and this neighbourhood, and that takes time. It's taken up a lot of time and energy. Not quite so central as before, but we have more space (I can be in one room and have no idea in which other room R is), and we have a garden.
